Agentic Invoicing: Let Your AI Assistant Handle Your Invoices

How to connect Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor to your Holdings account so you can manage invoices, quotes, and payments through plain language — no code required.

Agentic Invoicing with Holdings — See It in Action

Most business owners hate invoicing. Not because it's hard — but because it's tedious, repetitive, and easy to put off. The follow-ups are worse.

What if your AI assistant just handled it? Draft the invoice, send it, track it, follow up when it's overdue — all from a single prompt.

That's what agentic invoicing is. And you can set it up with Holdings today.

What "agentic" means

An AI agent isn't just a chatbot. It's a chatbot connected to your real tools — so when you say "send an invoice to Maple Street Coffee for $1,200, same line items as last month," it actually does it.

Holdings has a Workspace that your AI assistant can plug into. Once connected, Claude or ChatGPT can read your account, create invoices and quotes, look up clients, and flag what needs attention — all in plain language.

Every action that moves money requires your confirmation before it goes through. You stay in control. The AI removes the friction.

What you can ask it

Once your assistant is connected, you can say things like:

  • "What invoices are outstanding right now?"
  • "Create a quote for 20 hours of consulting at $150/hr for [client name]"
  • "Send a follow-up on the invoice that's been open for two weeks"
  • "Give me an overview of my account — what's paid, what's pending, what do I need to do?"
  • "How much have I invoiced in the last 30 days?"

If you're already using Claude or ChatGPT for other parts of your work, this makes your AI smarter about your money.

How to connect your AI assistant

Head to your Holdings Workspace and pick the connection option that matches the AI tool you use.

Connect Claude

This is the fastest path — about 2 minutes, no code, works in both Claude Desktop and the Claude web app.

You generate a connection key from your Holdings Workspace, then add Holdings as a custom connector inside Claude's settings. Paste in the connection URL, click Connect, and you're done. The key lives in the URL, so there's nothing else to configure.

> 🔒 Keep your connection URL private. If it's ever shared or exposed, regenerate it from your Workspace — the old one is invalidated instantly.

Once connected, try asking: "Give me an overview of my Holdings account — my payment setup status, any outstanding invoices or quotes, and what I should do next."

Connect ChatGPT

This takes about 5 minutes and requires a ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise plan. You'll build a private custom GPT that's wired to your Holdings account.

Here's how it works:

  1. Open the GPT editor in ChatGPT and name it something like Holdings Workspace
  2. Paste in the Holdings agent instructions — these tell the GPT how to behave and make sure every money action requires your confirmation
  3. Add a Holdings action by importing the action schema — this loads all the available Holdings tools automatically, no manual setup
  4. Set authentication using an API key you generate from your Holdings Workspace
  5. Add the Holdings privacy policy URL (ChatGPT requires this before saving a GPT with an action)
  6. Save it as Only me — your GPT carries your key, so keep it private

Test it: ask for an overview of your account and confirm it responds with real data.

Connect via MCP (Cursor, Claude Desktop by hand, or any MCP-compatible tool)

For developers or anyone running a self-hosted agent that speaks the Model Context Protocol. Requires Node.js 18 or newer on the machine running your assistant.

Three steps:

  1. Generate an API key from your Holdings Workspace
  2. Copy the MCP server config block Holdings provides — your API base URL is pre-filled, just swap in your key
  3. Add it to your tool: Claude Desktop (Settings → Developer → Edit Config, then restart), Cursor (MCP servers config), or any other MCP host

Once it's running, ask for your account overview to confirm the connection.

The honest version of what this is

You're not handing your finances to a robot. You're giving your AI assistant read access to your account and the ability to propose actions — which you approve before anything happens.

Think of it like a really good assistant who can check your books, draft the invoice, and hand it to you to send. The difference is this one's always available and doesn't need you to log into a dashboard.

Holdings makes this possible because everything — banking, invoicing, and bookkeeping — lives in one place. Your AI just talks directly to your money.
