DUNS Number

๐Ÿ“‹

Quick Definition

A unique nine-digit identifier assigned by Dun & Bradstreet that identifies your business entity and is used to build and track your business credit profile.

What Is DUNS Number?

A DUNS number (Data Universal Numbering System) is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) to every business entity in their database. It's been around since 1963 and is used by over 330 million businesses worldwide. Think of it as a universal business ID that follows your company across credit reports, government registrations, and vendor relationships.

Getting a DUNS number is free and relatively straightforward. You can request one through D&B's website, and it typically arrives within 30 business days for the free option (or 1-2 days if you pay for expedited processing). Once you have it, D&B creates a credit file for your business and starts tracking your payment history with vendors and lenders who report to them.

Your DUNS number is linked to your PAYDEX score โ€” D&B's business credit score. As vendors report your payment activity, your PAYDEX builds (or suffers). The number is also required for many government contracts โ€” if you want to do business with the federal government, you need a DUNS number to register in the System for Award Management (SAM). Many large corporations also require a DUNS number from their vendors as part of their procurement process.

Why It Matters for Small Businesses

Without a DUNS number, you essentially don't exist in the business credit world. Vendors, lenders, and credit agencies can't track your business's payment history, which means you can't build business credit. No business credit means you'll rely entirely on personal credit for financing, pay higher rates, and provide personal guarantees on business debt. Getting a DUNS number is the first step in building a business credit profile โ€” and unlike personal credit, which takes years to establish, you can build meaningful business credit in 6-12 months with consistent on-time payments to reporting vendors.

Example

Daniel starts a plumbing company. He gets his DUNS number (free, takes 30 days). He then opens trade credit accounts with three suppliers who report to D&B โ€” a plumbing supply house (Net 30, $5,000 limit), a hardware store (Net 30, $2,000 limit), and a uniform supplier (Net 30, $500 limit). He pays all three early (within 15 days) for six months. His PAYDEX score climbs to 90. When he applies for a $25,000 line of credit at his bank, the loan officer sees his strong PAYDEX and offers a competitive rate of 9% with no personal guarantee. Without the DUNS number and credit history, he'd have been offered 13% with a personal guarantee โ€” or denied entirely.
