What Is a Routing Number?

A routing number (also called an ABA routing transit number or RTN) is a unique 9-digit code assigned to every financial institution in the United States. The American Bankers Association (ABA) created the routing number system in 1910 to streamline the processing of paper checks.

Today, routing numbers are essential for:

  • ACH transfers — direct deposits, payroll, automatic bill payments
  • Wire transfers — domestic same-day transfers between banks
  • Direct deposit — receiving your paycheck or government benefits
  • Bill payments — automatic recurring payments
  • Tax refunds — IRS direct deposit of tax returns

How to Find Your Routing Number

Your routing number is printed on the bottom-left corner of your personal checks. It's the first set of 9 digits, followed by your account number and check number.
